Two people were killed when a horsebox taking entries from leading trainer Brian Meehan’s Manton yard to Thursday’s evening race meeting at Newmarket was in collision with three cars on the M11 near Harlow.
On his blog Meehan called it an ‘horrific incident’ and said the families of those killed ‘are foremost in our thoughts’.
On Friday one of the horses taken from the crash to the Newmarket Equine Hospital died. Pistolero was a Paint pony used to help calm horses before racing – sometimes shepherding them to the start.
Meehan described Pistolero as “a treat to ride and children, in particular, used to love him. He was, without doubt, one of our stable stars, and we shall all miss him greatly.”
One racehorse remains (Friday) in a ‘serious’ condition and another is being monitored with only minor problems. The stable staff accompanying the horses were unhurt, but were in a state of shock.
Brian Meehan wrote: ”It is a very sad day for us. It was an horrific incident on the motorway and we would like to send our sincerest condolences to the families of the people who lost their lives.”
