At their meeting on Monday (January 26) Marlborough town councillors heard about the sad fate of a Muscovy duck that was found suffering badly after eating bread.
Val Compton and a friend, who are both volunteers for the Wiltshire Wildlife Hospital, found the duck looking grievously sick and frothing from its bill. A local vet said it was suffering from ‘sour crop’ that had led to pneumonia.
Its condition was incurable and it had to be put out of its suffering.
The Mayor told Mrs Compton that the council would see that notices are put up along the banks of the River Kennet in the car park and in Coopers Meadow explaining why bread is positively harmful for ducks and swans.
