The tail of Hurricane Bertha didn’t leave the trail of destruction as it swept across our area that some national newspapers and forecasters led us to believe might happen.
As the remnants of the storm passed overhead earlier this morning (Sunday 10 August) Marlborough weatherman, Eric Gilbert recorded 18mm of rain falling in a two hour period from about 6 o’clock. The wind followed later, and a maximum gust of 28mph was noted just after half past three this afternoon. The barometric pressure dropped to 991mb, the lowest since last March.
Elsewhere the picture was quite different, with gusts of more than 50mph recorded in Devon and numerous incidents of localised flooding across many parts of the UK.
