The offer by a resident to pay for a memorial seat to his late wife, to be placed in the High Street, has been accepted in principle by Marlborough town council’s Planning Committee but it still has the problem of finding a suitable site.
Michael Dobie, who lives in Landsdown Place, has made the offer in tribute to the fact that the community helped to pay for a kidney dialysis machine for his wife when she was taken sick and he wanted to repay that kindness.
But the council’s Planning Committee, which has been given the decision of where to place the seat because there are highways implications involved, is concerned that any business, shopkeeper or resident in close proximity of a site in the High Street will need to be consulted.
Councillor Stewart Dobson revealed the problem when he read sections of Mr Dobie’s letter to fellow councillors and, together with other councillors, suggested that Priory Park or the grounds of St Mary’s Church, overlooking the High Street, might be a more suitable spot.
The committee decided to agree in principle to Mr Dobie’s kind offer and to discuss with him a potential alternative site for the memorial seat.
