Sirs,
I have read with interest your article outlining Marlborough College’s plans to open its doors more widely.
On the one hand, the College is to be applauded for intending to extend its charitable activities. After all, the College is a charity (charity number 309486) and from its charitable status receives financial benefits.
On the other hand, there would be little to applaud if the College intends to poach bright pupils from our excellent State schools. The Master, Louise Moelwyn-Hughes, speaks of opening her doors to “children of potential”. Of course, all children have potential, but any reasonable person might think that the Master has her eye on a particular selection of children.
Yours,
Anthony Smith
