National recognition and credit to Marlborough Tennis, last night (Thursday 24 April) awarded the ‘Club of the Year’ accolade at the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) awards ceremony at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton. But Marlborough scooped not just one, but two awards. Hilda Moore was awarded the ‘Lifetime Achievement’ Award.
The evening was presided over by HRH the Duchess of Gloucester as Honorary President of the LTA, who praised all finalists and volunteers for ‘their energy, talent and great inspiration to British Tennis’
Scott Lloyd, Chief Executive of the LTA, identified that grass roots tennis was fundamental to success. He highlighted that the UK is now number one per capita for people playing tennis. Sue Barker CBE, a former television presenter and professional tennis player, was effusive in her praise for everyone attending, describing everyone as a winner.
Marlborough Tennis was one of 300 nominations for the ‘LTA Club of the Year’ and saw off strong competition from four other clubs. There are around 3500 clubs nationally. Four of which came from Wiltshire.
Laura Robson a former British No.1 and Olympic silver medallist who is now the Tournament Director for the women’s WTA 500 event at Queens Club, London for the first time in over 50 years highlighted the investment in the new clubhouse, strong focus on participation and activities as key strengths.
Andrew Payne, Chair at Marlborough Tennis said “we were simply astounded to win not just one, but two National Awards and its fantastic kudos for our town and community. The club is simply buzzing with excitement. Thanks to everyone who has supported the club over the years through volunteering and from the community and business support so willingly given”
Marlborough Tennis is a Charitable Incorporated Tennis club, is a six-court club, all volunteer run, situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty beside the Golf club. With 327 members spanning all age groups the club has seen significant growth and participation in a range of tennis activities. The club is also hosting a ‘Bright Ideas for Tennis’ event this Sunday between 10-3pm. This is a charity fundraiser for disadvantaged youth tennis and will feature two top British professional tennis players. This event is open to everyone – sign up details are here.
