Sirs,
It is great news that there is to be a by-election for a Town Councillor in Marlborough East Ward on March 17th.
However it is a rather tight timetable with nominations closing on the 18th of this month.
This will be the first election or by-election to the Town Council for eleven years and whoever is returned will have great personal authority.
Only a few of the present councillors have ever had to put their case before the electorate and fight an election.
Of course it is not the fault of other councillors who were returned unopposed and didn’t have to fight an election, because there were too few candidates.
The town needs to get away from the system of co-option which has allowed the Town Council to become a self selecting body – let us hope there is a contest.
Yours,
David Chandler
