I am a son of rural Shropshire and a self-confessed fan of village hall productions of all types, and Avebury Players’ production of Cinderella, at the Avebury Social Centre on Saturday night, is one of the best I have had the pleasure to attend. The riotous participation, and applause, from the packed house had the ancient stones rattling in their sockets.
The old favourites; Cinderella, Prince Charming, Baroness Hardup, Dandini, Buttons and, of course, the ”visually different” sisters, plus an enthusiastic supporting cast, did not disappoint. At one point I feared for the chastity of Prince Charming as he fought off the testosterone fuelled and amorous advances of the sisters. Well, they stole my heart as did the little mice and their unfeasibly large slice of cheese. [Spoiler Warning] Thankfully there was a Happy Ending with the beautiful Cinderella marrying the dashing, and still innocent, Prince Charming.
Who can resist the unbridled passion of amateur troupes, they will live forever; Oh no, they won’t; OH YES, THEY WILL!
