Marlborough Players get edgy with a northern pub drama

What is it about pubs and drama?  Some pubs turn themselves into micro-theatres putting on plays in an upstairs or back room. Some pubs generate their own Saturday night dramas.  

There’s the star-studded Queen Vic.  There’s Corrie’s Rovers Return which must have done more harm to the use of the apostrophe than any other pub.

And then there’s Two – Jim Cartwright’s well-known play in a pub.  And with Two the Marlborough Players’ are launching a new series of Spring productions.  

These new performances are aimed at providing an edgier and more contemporary element to the Players’ already popular performance calendar.  

Two will be directed by Anna Friend, who most recently launched the town’s youth theatre company Marlborough Young Actors and directed their first play, Teechers.

Anna Friend told Marlborough News Online: “This production of Two will bring something new from The Marlborough Players. Two is a fantastic play which gives us a snapshot view into Northern pub life. It offers a great opportunity to anyone looking to get involved with challenging character work and well written dialogue”

Originally written to be performed by two actors, it may be cast as an ensemble piece. It is written as a number of duologues, some funny, some poignant and all providing the backdrop to a hard and emotional plot involving the central characters: landlord and landlady.

The read through for Two will be held on Sunday, November 24 from 2pm, with auditions on Monday, November 25 and Wednesday, November 27 at 7pm. Read through and auditions will take place at The Bear Hotel, Marlborough.
