As a lasting memorial to those from the area around Ramsbury and far beyond who were killed in the First World War, more than 400 saplings were planted close to the airfield that played such a notable part in the Second World War.
So many volunteers – including Ramsbury Scouts, school children from Ramsbury Primary School and their parents – turned out to help with the planting that the job was completed in two hours.
The saplings will rejuvenate Burnt Wood which lies on the edge the land once occuopied by Ramsbury Airfield – and which still has some physical evidence of its wartime use.
The memorial project was led by Claire Costello with the Kennet Valley at War Trust. It is a joint memorial bridging the two world wars – and marking the centenary of the Armistice and the centenary of the Royal Air Force.
