The Age of Decadence – Politics & Society with David Du Croz- part of ‘History Live’ at the Merchant’s House

20 April @ 10:30 am 12:30 pm

Behind the “pomp and circumstance” of late Victorian and Edwardian Britain there lurked social upheaval, political turmoil, industrial unrest and imperial rebellion. To what extent do these “decadent” elements undermine the splendour, imperial grandeur and apparent strength of the country at this time in its history? Is the lustrous image of this period an illusion? Does this revised interpretation of this period of British history devalue one hundred years of constitutional development devoid of revolution; does it depreciate massive economic and territorial expansion; does it help to explain the drift into global war in 1914?

The Merchant’s House is thrilled to present History Live, a week-long festival celebrating history in all its forms. This inaugural event promises something for everyone: from engaging lectures and a walking tour of Marlborough to visits to Wilton Windmill and Shaw House.

History Live invites visitors to step back in time, explore local heritage, and experience history in a dynamic, interactive way. Organisers hope this marks the start of a landmark annual event for Marlborough.
