Marlborough 1 Bristol UWE 2
After a disappointing start following the mid-season Christmas break against Bath Buccs, Marlborough welcomed Bristol UWE (University of the West of England) who were positioned just above them in the table, for yet another crucial bottom of the table clash.
The game started with both sides moving the ball quickly through the midfield in an effort to gain the upper hand. Marlborough’s defensive press was working exceptionally well and they almost took the lead on several occasions.
Unfortunately for the home side it was UWE who took the lead after some sharp, quick play down the right hand side led to a smart cross and a finish from an unmarked UWE striker at the back post.
Although visibly disappointed following their efforts Marlborough were soon once again threatening the UWE goal. Their patience and resolve was rewarded after a long corner play got the ball to the goal mouth and following several attempts to score, Anil Sud was able to tuck the ball home from close range. 1-1 at half time.
With both teams knowing the game was there for the taking the intensity and effort levels were ramped even higher in the second half.
Goals could have been scored at either end but unfortunate bounces here and there stopped any further goals until UWE once again took the lead following a short corner and short range shot.
Desperate not to lose, Marlborough put together several outstanding, flowing moves but were just not able to apply any finishing touches.
It looked likely that Marlborough would tie the game at some point but their hopes were dashed after they had to spend the last 15 minutes with 10 men following several sin bin offences.
The game ended 2-1 in yet another close, heartbreaking game for the home side.
