The fifteen boys and girls who make up Marlborough Cricket Club’s Under 11 team have won all seven T20 matches this year in the Wiltshire North Division, taking a total of 61 wickets and conceding just over 400 runs.
Last Friday, July 20, the team joined in the T20 Skills challenge at the Ageas Bowl, home of Hampshire Cricket Club, Southampton. The team participated in nine different drills across all cricket disciplines. This included hitting pull-shot sixes, targeted bowling, and various run-out fielding drills.
The young cricketers also had the opportunity to meet the England and Middlesex Captain, Eoin Morgan, as well as watching the Hampshire Team beat Middlesex in the T20.
Emily Travis, Coach Support Worker, Marlborough Cricket Club said, “The children loved being allowed to play on the pitch at the Ageas Bowl with their friends – and getting to meet the England ODI captain made it a real evening to remember.”
Magnus Painter, lead U11 coach commented, “We have over a hundred juniors playing at Marlborough now, it’s brilliant to see so many enjoying their cricket. I’m really proud of the U11s. They are a great group who have really developed as a team. This shows in their results this season.”
Boys and girls (age 9 to 11) from six local primary schools currently make up the Marlborough U11 team. As well as weekly training, they generally play two matches per week.
Marlborough Cricket Club is located on the edge of Savernake Forest. From U9s, children can play competitively, transitioning from softball to hard-ball cricket at U11s. The junior teams play in the Wiltshire Youth League, Kennet League matches, and local Kwik Cricket festivals. The Club also runs the ‘All-Stars’ Programme, an ECB-led initiative for 5 to 8 year-olds.
