Following their success in The School Games (held at Marlborough College, on July 10), Ramsbury Primary school were delighted to win the award of top-performing primary school in sport in Swindon and Wiltshire. This is the fifth year that the school, which holds the Platinum School Games Mark, has won the award.
The Platinum School Games Mark is only available to schools which have previously been awarded the Gold Mark. Criteria for achieving this highest award include: participation and workforce (the number of children involved in sport and leadership activities), competition (the amount of different sports played) and clubs (links with local clubs and establishments).
Forty-six Key Stage 2 children from Ramsbury Primary represented the school at the Wiltshire School Games on July 10, which are the culmination of the primary school sporting calendar.
Ramsbury School came first in the tri-golf, third in the tennis, third in quad kids (athletics), fourth in orienteering and seventh in swimming. Earlier in the year they won the county finals in hockey which was part of the Winter School Games.
Presenting the Year 6 Sports Leaders with the trophy for the top-performing school award on Monday July 22, Steve Boocock (CEO of Wiltshire and Swindon Sport) told the children, “Yet again you have shown determination and teamwork across a range of sports, with your participation in twenty-four of the sporting competitions that we have run throughout the year. I’m delighted to be here to present your award.
Ramsbury really sets a wonderful example for participation and excellence in primary school sport.”
Kirsty Miles, who provides full-time PE teaching at Ramsbury commented, “This is a fantastic achievement by the children of Ramsbury. For a relatively small school, we try to ensure every child is involved in sports festivals throughout the year. The children’s commitment and enjoyment is reflected by how well they have performed in many different sports throughout the year.”
