Marlborough’s after school Kumon Maths and English classes, run at Marlborough Youth and Community Centre are now also being offered on Zoom.
Teacher, Lindsay Barkholt told Marlborough.news, “I’m offering face to face classes with no more than 8 pupils in a group, on a Tuesday and Thursday from 3.30 pm but I am also running a Zoom class every Saturday at 9 am. We remained running throughout lockdown and the online classes became very popular with parents so I decided to continue them.
Kumon offers support for children who are struggling, particularly with confidence. The classes not only look at building ability but also confidence. Open to all ages and abilities, pupils follow an individualised programme where the work becomes incrementally more difficult. They are encouraged to solve problems themselves and having done so the confidence spills over into other subjects.”
Kumon works on the little and often approach. Pupils are given 15-20 minutes of homework per day which is then marked at the next class. The Kumon method was founded over 60 years ago and aims to develop a child’s independent study skills, needed for school, university, employment and other aspects of adult life.
Lindsay, who originally worked as a secondary Science teacher and has also been a Kumon Area Manager said, “If parents are looking for a tutor for catch-up due to the disruption of schooling this year why not try Kumon instead. There are many companies springing up offering online tutoring but the Kumon programme is a tried and tested one. We have a free trial until the end of October.”
