World Book Day, Thursday March 4, proved to be more popular than ever in lockdown. Rushall CE VA School held a competition to make favourite book characters and organised a special World Book Day Assembly. Oare Primary School held a virtual “Share a Story” event on TEAMs and Year 5 and 6 pupils were tasked with choosing their favourite picture book to read to the younger children of the school in book-themed breakout rooms supervised by staff and governors.
Principal, of Oare Primary, Gudrun Osborn, who is also the literacy lead for the school said, “The event was a fabulous success with staff and governors coming together to support the oldest children of school in reading a story to our youngest. The excitement of the countdown as we went into breakout rooms was just wonderful. I was delighted to receive a message afterwards from a Year 3 exclaiming that it was “Really fun!” We have really embraced the technology available to us throughout lockdown and in doing so have not only delivered great teaching, but really importantly have had some really fun experiences together.
The school shared many book related activities throughout the week including sharing a digital library linked to authors reading their books, as well as online ‘live’ Book Trust sessions to help inspire the children to spend the digital World Book token that they were each emailed home. The week ended with the children and staff bringing along the wonderful loo roll book characters that they had created to share in the weekly Friday whole school live worship on TEAMs.”
Anne Curry, a Foundation Governor at Rushall CE VA School, told Marlborough.news, “What a super World Book Day Assembly today! It was lovely to be able to see the hard work and creativity of our children, as the class teachers shared their screens to show the competition entries. Lots of great book choices and unusual ways of making favourite book characters including using clay, paper, cardboard, wooden spoons, and even cake! Some fantastic films were sent in too.
Congratulations to our prizewinners: Bethany, Agnes, Preston, Erika, Holly, Joy, Freddy, and Russell! Each winner will receive a certificate, and a new book of their choice.
Well done to everyone- all of the entries were wonderful and we hope you can bring them into school to show us all next week!”
