Wiltshire Council have announced that after the chaos of last weekend (Saturday/Sunday 4/5 December) where the three-way roadworks adjacent to the College and St Peter’s ground much of West Marlborough to a halt, and the many other incidents that residents and visitors to Marlborough have had to endure of late, weekends between now and Christmas should be ‘roadwork-free’.
Spearheaded by Roger Mortimer of Sound Knowledge, who – along with many other Marlborough traders and shoppers – was absolutely fed up with the problems caused by the incessant stream of roadworks, not just as inconvenience for everyone but as a real potential dampener on trade, and at the most important time of the year as Christmas approaches.
Marlborough West Wiltshire Councillor Jane Davies was relieved and happy to confirm what the Council had agreed. “I am pleased that WC have been able to secure confirmation that there won’t be any further weekend road works between now and the New Year in Marlborough, thus enabling residents and visitors to enjoy the shops and cafes. The run up to Christmas is a crucial time for our independent traders, so I’d love to suggest we all shop local when we can.”
She did add that there will a diversion next week – between 8pm on Monday 12 December and 5am on Wednesday 14 – caused by necessary electricity works by SSE in George Lane, and traffic will be diverted via the High Street.
But weekends should be clear.
