Interested in u3a? Heard of u3a but never looked to see what it is? Never heard of u3a? An opportunity to find out will be at the Town Hall on Wednesday 3 September when Marlborough area’s u3a in Kennet will be holding their annual Open Day, and enabling all questions to be answered. Anyone can pop in and see what u3a is, what it could offer and if they are interested in joining.
u3a isn’t as it’s name implies ‘a university’. Rather it’s a UK-wide organisation that enables members to enjoy what they enjoy(!), with others from around the area for each group who have similar interests. Or a similar interest as no two of us are alike. It creates opportunities to learn – about what you already are interested in, and to learn about things that are new, but exciting. To discover. But it’s also a great social gathering as from just this area’s group there are now more than seven hundred an fifty members.
And lots of different (interest) groups covering – well, whatever you are interested in…. Walking, art, reading, cycling, wine, languages – and many more – currently about seventy different interest groups.
The ‘3a’ refers to the ‘Third Age’, what was once called ‘old age’ but is now recognised as an age of activity where retired, or people no longer in full-time work can come together and share learning, activity and experiences.
u3a in Kennet is the local group centred on Marlborough and the surrounding villages. Very popular, as noted above with a growing membership. Not all of the current seven hundred and fifty members will all be in the same place at the same time, but they all get involved in the interest groups of their choice, and importantly, it’s also an organisation for people to meet new friends. It’s also a social grouping.
Jill Turner, chair of the u3a in Kennet group says – ‘call into Marlborough Town Hall in for a free cup of tea or coffee on Wednesday morning next week to see what u3a can offer you’.
