Table Tennis has long been one of the most consistent and conservative (with small ‘c’) of all sports regarding rules, but not any more.
In a groundbreaking move set to revolutionise the game, Table Tennis England is looking to introduce a significant change that will allow players to compete using two bats — one in each hand. Marlborough.news has uncovered this as yet secret but radical and fundamental change in the game and ‘trials’ to assess how this can be served are being conducted at Marlborough’s Kennet Valley Hall, in Lockeridge.
After extensive discussions with players, coaches, and officials, this rule change aims to add a new layer of excitement and challenge to competitive table tennis. The new ‘Dual Bat’ system is expected to encourage greater ambidextrous skill development, enhance strategic gameplay, and provide more thrilling rallies for spectators.
When contacted about this unannounced development to the game, Table Tennis England spokesperson April Foulton said: “We are always looking for ways to push the boundaries of the sport while maintaining its integrity”….. “The introduction of two bats will allow players to switch seamlessly between forehand and backhand strokes without the limitations of a single racket. It’s a game-changer — literally!”
Under the new regulations, players will be required to use identical specification bats in each hand, and both must conform to current equipment regulations. The change will come into effect immediately, with the first Dual Bat tournaments expected to take place later this year.
Reactions from players have been overwhelmingly positive. England international top seed Oldit Intoo-Hands remarked, “This is an incredible development! I’ve already started training my weaker hand, and I can’t wait to see how this changes the game.”
However, concerns have been raised about the potential impact on existing tactics. Renowned defensive Blockit Eze (brother of England football international) commented, “It’s going to be tough adjusting to opponents who can now attack from both sides. But I guess that’s the way the ball bounces!”
Fans eager to see the new rules in action won’t have to wait long, as Table Tennis England plans to host an exhibition match at an undeclared national venue showcasing the Dual Bat format later this month.

But, this isn’t all. We have discovered that within Table Tennis England’s ‘Rules Committee’ this ‘two bat’ move has inspired some further ‘out-of-the-box’ or ‘left-field’ thinking. One even more radical development will be – as each player will have two bats – the introduction of another ball into the game.
So – two bats / two balls. But where does this leave doubles? Four bats / four balls?
The single player version has been tried out already – quite successfully – as shown in the pic above. Widespread adoption of this new style is as yet still over the horizon, but not very far beyond, and even to be trialled properly a process of consultation will be required. All teams and clubs are to be contacted and the changes explained. Table Tennis England are about to embark on producing a round Robin for all Batmen……
