Scheduled for discussion at next Monday’s meeting of the town Council Planning Committee is an application to convert the former school into residential dwellings.
This has been ‘around the houses’ a few times (please excuse the pun). Originally the ‘vision’ was for the former school building to be turned into a boutique hotel, something that Marlborough is lacking although with the introduction of the Premier Inn opposite the Business Park the number of rooms available has increased, but maybe an upmarket boutique hotel would have been a valuable and attractive addition to Marlborough.
Regarding the future of the former St Peter’s / Grammar School main building, apart from a boutique hotel, there have been plenty of suggestions and ‘supposed’ proposals. From office units, through fast food facility to a ‘multi level’ garden centre (although that was probably more of a non-serious reaction to the plants and greenery adorning the roof and gutter areas). But finally, PL/2024/0019 has landed, submitted for developers Sherborne St Peters Ltd with the intention of turning the old iconic St Peter’s School (formerly the Marlborough Grammar School) building into ‘two houses, four maisonettes and seven flats’.
With the seven houses already in the first stage of the development, the former school site will offer a total of twenty new dwellings, parking for forty cars and a new electrical sub station.
It would appear – from the aerial pics – that the initial seven houses seemed to (just) escape the recent flooding, we hope that if this goes ahead the ground floor of the new units are also protected from any potential flood.
Plenty else on the agenda for discussion on Monday so either click here to see what’s listed, or turn up to the Court Room of the Town Hall on Monday evening (5 February) at 7pm to listen and watch.
