A very traditional country pub in the heart of a picturesque village is set to reopen next month after being repaired and renovated by the local community, following it’s takeover by that community. The Plough, in Shalbourne will become a central part of village life once again.
More than thirty local families bought the pub at the end of 2024 then carried out repairs while it continued trading in 2025. A short closure in January this year allowed final refurbishments to the bar, dining area, and toilets. Shalbourne welcomes The Plough back into its community.
The Plough is in the centre of Shalbourne, a picturesque village just three miles from Hungerford (and nine miles from Marlborough. It serves good food, has a cosy bar and outdoor seating overlooking the village green. Children and dogs are welcome as it offers a family environment whilst regularly hosting live music and events.
Set in the North Wessex Downs, Shalbourne is popular with walkers and visitors and is a great destination for cyclists exploring the countryside. The village lso features a 12th-century church, village shop, playground, sports field, and a very popular annual classic car show.
The pub has faced challenges in recent years, including Covid, multiple unsuccessful owners, and a long closure in 2024. The community’s purchase marks a fresh start, aiming to make the pub a thriving local hub and a destination for visitors from nearby areas.
Christopher Fisher, a director of the Shalbourne Pub Company, said: “After a period of neglect, the Plough has received some overdue attention and investment. It has been transformed into a warm, cheerful and welcoming destination while keeping its character. We hope to attract both locals and visitors – come and try us, we’re worth a snoop – and we’re sure you’ll want to become regulars!”
