The latest independent shop to open in Hughenden Yard is Scruffy’s Nest. Situated next to the back of W H Smiths, the shop sells a vast array of pre-loved homeware and furniture and is a new business venture for Tina and Trevor. There’s painted furniture, ornaments, mirrors, wall hangings, cushions, wicker tables, picnic baskets, hats, new knitted baby clothes, vinyl records and record players to name but a few. In pride of place there’s an electric organ that was originally in a Reading showroom and was used by Mike Oldfield as part of Tubular Bells. Trevor told Marlborough.news, “It’s the sort of shop which just invites a ‘mooch about’. We have plenty of quirky items that would be suitable for unusual gifts and all very reasonably priced.” Some satisfied customers have already told Trevor that they will be back to do their Christmas shopping.

“Old’s the New New,” say Trevor and Tina. And they are firm believers that a shop offers a much better retail experience than online. “We are firm believers that a retail shop encourages face to face conversation and helps combat dementia by promoting social interaction and cognitive stimulation. In a world where everything seems to be done online, we want to keep the art of face to face conversations and interaction going.”
Trevor and Tina are grateful for the warm welcome they have received from other traders in Hughenden Yard and from Marlborough shoppers.
The shop will be open from 10-5 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 10-4 on Sundays. There will be some Halloween themed gifts available from the end of the month. To find out more visit Scruffy Nest’s Facebook page.
