The ‘Running out of Time’ Climate Relay will be coming through Marlborough on Friday 7 October – but at the very early time of 06:35.
It’s a relay, so the runner coming in to Marlborough – from Avebury – will pass the baton at Marlborough’s Community Fridge to Mark Hedley who will then cover the next 10km leg to The Bell in Ramsbury.
What is ‘Running out of Time’? It’s a sponsored mass participation relay which creates a physical link between the centre of last year’s COP 26 (Glasgow) with this year’s COP 27 (Sharm-el-Sheikh in Egypt).
It’s a long, non-stop 24/7 run, starting in Glasgow on 30 September as 2pm and finishing in Sharm-el-Sheikh, on the banks of the Red Sea in Egypt just over a month later on Saturday 5 November. Overall, 7,726 Km and comprising 732 different stages.
Described by organisers as ‘The world’s biggest climate change relay!’, Running Out of Time will be the longest non-stop relay ever attempted with runners, cyclists and sailors working together to pass a baton hand-to-hand containing a powerful climate message from young people to the decision makers at COP27.
It’s about raising awareness for what is likely the major change to all our lives, much of which is becoming apparent now, and funds raised will go to support charities ‘Carbon Copy‘ and the Foundation for Environmental Education’s Global Forest Fund.
Where will the change take place in Marlborough? As noted above, at the Community Fridge, in the George Lane Car Park. At 06:35 in the morning it will probably be colder out of the fridge than in(!) but Marlborough.News will be there to mark the passing of the baton, which will contain the following message:
We are Running Out of Time.
Quality climate education and increased awareness are critical if we are to equip people of all ages and in all places with the knowledge and skills necessary to build a future in which everyone can thrive.
We are therefore calling on the world’s leaders to provide us with the skills, training and professional development to build a sustainable world.
We need to recognise young people as leaders, putting them at the forefront of the conversation about climate change and empowering them through education.
And to put in place the forward-thinking, consistent policies and funding to help us limit global warming to 1.5 degrees and support the transition to Net Zero Emissions.
We are committed to help build a future that is inclusive and sustainable for all.
Help us get there!
