Marlborough’s esteemed historical author, former Mayor and Wiltshire Councillor Nick Fogg has been elected a Fellow of the prestigious Royal Historical Society (RHS) ‘in recognition of his contribution to historical scholarship’.
The award is an acknowledgement of the quality and importance of his growing number of historical studies, most recently ‘Forgotten Englishman‘, the almost incredulous but real story of Thomas Stephens, of Bushton Manor, Clyffe Pypard, who was the first Englishman to make a significant impact in India back in the sixteenth century. In the words of the leading historian of India, William Dalrymple, the book ‘tells the story of a fascinating life, brilliantly illuminated by dogged research in the archives’.
Also during the pandemic and lockdown, Nick authored ‘Wellington’s American General‘, the life of Sir Frederick Robinson, the longest-serving soldier in the British Army, a book described as ‘an entertaining and authoritative account of a remarkable military career’.
‘Panache and humour distinguish every page of this marvellous book’ wrote the Daily Mail of Nicholas Fogg’s ‘The Voyages of the Great Britain’, the story of the world’s first ocean-going liner. ‘Hidden Shakespeare’, his biography of the Bard, has run into six editions in both hard and paperback.
As well as writing about history, Nick Fogg has had a ringside seat during frequent visits to the conflict zones of the Middle East. He wrote of some of these experiences in Intrepid Arabia, a volume edited by Tom Tugendhat. He worked on the economics of the Middle East Peace Processes in a project based at Harvard University’s Middle East Institute and ran a seminar series on the economic development of the Palestinian Territories at St. Antony’s College, Oxford. As a result, the Canadian International Development Research Centre financed the publication of ‘The Palestinian Territories: Optimism with Information: Democracy in the Islamic World‘.
Nick Fogg has written a number of position papers as a consultant to the Council of Former Heads of State and Government, which includes Bill Clinton amongst its members. His study of Sectarianism was published as part of composite volume by the United Nations University Press. He is currently involved in a partnership of noted medical authorities under the leadership of the former Head of Health and Education for the Commonwealth, on the cheerful topic of pandemics and has contributed a historic survey of such universal afflictions.
