Within the last hour, Wiltshire Police have confirmed that a train – the 16:34 from Paddington to Penzance – collided with the debris, although no injuries have been reported.
The accident happened at around 5.30pm.
National Rail confirmed services were being stopped until the debris had been cleared, although they were not speculating how long this would take.
In a statement, they said: “Trains are unable to run between Westbury and Newbury. Services between Westbury and Reading may divert via Chippenham and Melksham. Taxis are operating between Bedwyn and Newbury.
“Passengers between Reading and Newbury looking to travel towards Westbury are advised to travel via Reading for other services to Westbury via Chippenham and Melksham.”
Rail operator First Great Western said: “Due to an object on the line disruption is expected on services through Bedwyn until the end of service today. The line is currently closed.”
