Pupils at Preshute Primary School have been enjoying a special Arts Week where they have been learning about famous artists, experiencing workshops run by local artists and creating their own paintings, sculptures, mosaics, collages and clay work. Today, Friday June 21, parents are invited in to view the completed work and members of the public will be able to view a selection on display in the Nova Gallery from Thursday July 4th to Saturday July 6th.

Year 5 teacher and Art Lead, Rebecca Gee, told Marlborough.news, “The week has enabled the children to express themselves, to explore different mediums and have fun.”

Local artists, Sophie Bendall, Emma Tallini, Isla Willetts and Bethany Kohrt ran workshops and the children also visited Westwinds, Manton where they were inspired by nature. The guiding question for the week was ‘How can you bring a picture to life?’ and this linked with the topics that each class had been studying. For example, Year 5 had been studying the monarchy and so produced pictures of various monarchs, Year 6 had been studying plants so looked at artists who paint plants, while Year 4 had studied Henri Rousseau so the pupils painted animals. Each class had to create one 2D and one 3D piece in groups or as individuals. The final outcomes include portraits using natural materials, wire flowers, river and pond scenes and under water scenes. One class created huge marbled wings for a photo opportunity.

Headteacher, Mrs Claire Hann-Perkins, said, “It’s been a very inspirational week and the children have had the opportunity to explore many different types of art. The children have become very knowledgeable about various artists and we look forward to sharing their work with the school community at the end of the day and the wider community next week.”
