Ofsted inspectors visited Ogbourne CofE Primary School in November 2023 and carried out a full inspection. The school was graded GOOD in all areas and described as “A harmonious school where pupils embody the school values of friendship, integrity, respect and effort. Pupils behave well and feel safe in school. There are high expectations for all pupils to achieve their best, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities.”
Ogbourne’s children enjoy a broad and balanced curriculum for all seven years of their primary school education, with careful sequencing “to ensure that pupils’ knowledge builds year on year”. A love of reading is fostered and pupils are “confident, fluent readers.”
Any readers who fall behind are “swiftly identified,” receive “effective support” and therefore catch up quickly. Weekly newsletters provide parents with top tips for reading with their children and staff share new and exciting texts.
The school was praised for dedication to student voice, and its aim to create leaders who can ‘change the world for the better’, resulting in pupils being “tolerant, inclusive and respectful of differences”. Examples included a deep and meaningful understanding of British values such as democracy and passionate debates on topical issues.
Importantly, “Pupils look forward to coming to school. Attendance is high. Children in Reception know and follow the school’s routines and expectations. The well-constructed learning environment helps them build independence. As they move through the school, pupils develop resilience in their learning. They persevere when they find learning tricky. Lessons proceed without disruption. At social times, pupils play cooperatively. They enjoy the activities available in the playground, such as the outdoor gym.”
Lucy Crump, Head of School at Ogbourne CofE Primary School, commented, “I am extremely proud of our school community, the strengths of which have been so eloquently highlighted in this report. Our intent is to create a dynamic and inclusive learning environment with the children at the centre of all that we do. I can confidently say that we have achieved this recognition thanks to each and every individual.”
Nicky Edmondson, CEO of Excalibur Academies Trust, added, “We are incredibly proud of Ogbourne and its collective hard work which has resulted in such an impressive report. It also highlights the importance of being part of our Trust, with our skilled central team and plenty of networking opportunities across the schools.”
