Ogbourne CofE Primary School is celebrating achieving the Bristol Standard which is a respected self-evaluation framework for early years and play settings that supports continuous quality improvement. The Bristol standard identifies good practice and is aligned with national and international research. The whole staff team were required to reflect on 10 dimensions of quality, to gather evidence of their strengths and to set actions for improvement.
The feedback letter from the Bristol Standard validators praised the school recognising the meaningful reflection and plans for improvement. Lucy Crump, Principal of Ogbourne CofE Primary School, commented, “We are thrilled to have achieved The Bristol Standard which officiates the holistic and everyday practice we provide for the children in our care.”
The Bristol Standard commended Ogbourne’s strong position within its rural community, highlighting how this sense of place is woven through regular visits and meaningful involvement with local groups and events. Pupils possess a strong sense of the school’s vision and values which is enhanced by art work bringing the vision “From small streams, big rivers flow” to life.

The school’s thoughtful approach to its indoor and outdoor environments was praised for its creativity, which in turn supports children’s emotional, physical and sensory development. Children are allowed to explore barefoot on different surfaces, both inside and out, reflecting a strong understanding of early childhood development.
Transitions are handled with equal sensitivity, with practical measures—such as later start times for meaningful conversations with teachers and inviting parents on trips—demonstrating a thoughtful, relationship-based approach.
Ogbourne’s development targets build on its strengths and aim to enhance children’s experiences, supported by plans for regular formal supervision to promote staff wellbeing and professional growth.
Nick Lewis, CEO of Excalibur Academies Trust, said “This is wonderful news and speaks volumes to the expertise and dedication of staff at Ogbourne. Whilst this is well known in the local area, the community has an offer that is formally recognised as excellent.”
