Tipi Tapa opened in Hilliers Yard, Marlborough only yesterday and is already buzzing with people keen to sample the Andalucian tapas. The Marlborough restaurant is David Wenborn’s and business partner, Nigel Facett’s latest venture. David spent 26 years in Spain where he collected and perfected the recipes for the tapas served in Tipi Tapa. “What we serve is the real deal, not an English interpretation of tapas but what you’d eat in Spain with an emphasis on fresh food.”
Tipi Tapa will be open from 10 am for brunch, lunch from 12 – 3pm and evening tapas from 5-10pm. David told Marlborough.news, “For brunch we offer churros with a hot drink, or why not try our Pan con Tomate (tomatoes, olive oil and garlic on toasted bread), which goes really well with coffee and is typically Spanish. We’ll also be offering a selection of breakfast sandwiches on Galician baguette bread – Seranito (pork loin), Serrano ham and roasted green peppers and alioli.”
David’s passion for Spanish tapas is reflected in the menu which has a wide choice of dishes. “We have a fixed menu but every week there will be 7-10 specials with fresh fish. It’s possible there will be dishes people haven’t tried before such as rabbit and oxtail. We work with specialist Mediterranean food suppliers and our fabulous selection of fish is delivered fresh off the boat from Brixham.”
Tipi Tapa also serves Spanish wine and sherries which are matched to the dishes. David commented, “Some wines are exclusive to us and come from very small vineyards. They are not available in UK shops. All have been selected by a friend who is a sommelier.”
The Spanish feel of the restaurant extends to the staff, who are all fluent Spanish speakers, and includes David’s daughter, Jessica.
For several years David and Nigel ran a tapas food truck which catered for weddings, festivals and events as well as touring several Wiltshire towns. This led to the opening of the Cricklade branch of Tipi Tapa in 2001. David commented, “We’d always wanted to come to Marlborough. I love the place. I saw the opportunity and took it.”
Tipi Tapa is offering a loyalty card which once full offers a £30 voucher to spend in the restaurant. David commented, “We are passionate about what we do so why not come along and try us? There are still tables available for this Saturday, June 25 and some early bookings left for Friday June 24, 5-6.30pm.”
Bookings can be made through the website here. Make sure you select Marlborough and not Cricklade.
