Kennet Valley School pupils are getting excited about Maths with the help of seven mischievous Maths Monkeys. They are designed to enthuse and motivate children about Maths both inside and outside the classroom.
Pupils discovered the unexpected arrival of the Maths Monkeys on the school playground just before break time. It appeared that the Monkeys’ flying basket had crash landed!
However, the Monkeys, who are named Molly, Marvin, Malcolm, Matilda, Mavis, Mildred and Marky-Mark were unharmed and had dressed for the winter weather with distinctive and colourful hand-knitted scarves.
Each Maths Monkey has chosen a year group to help with their Maths and will be working hard to bring more interest, excitement and enthusiasm into the pupils’ maths learning.
As well as being present and getting involved in classroom activities, the Monkeys have also planned to have sleep-overs at each and every pupil’s house. Once there they will encourage pupils to understand how much maths is part of everyday life.
Pupils and their families will be encouraged to get involved in everyday Maths activities and fill in the communal Maths Diary. An example of some of the activities the Maths Monkeys will be encouraging are: Baking, weighing things out, multiplying quantities of ingredients and working out cooking times, going shopping and adding up the prices, spotting shapes and numbers on a walk in the countryside and reading bus and train timetables.
