Marlborough’s campsite, at the top of Postern Hill, on the edge of Savernake Forest and overlooking the town will close in early October when the season draws to a close. The final night for bookings will be Sunday 05 October.
Run by Sherwood Pines Camping Ltd the announcement stated that this decision was ‘based on the long-term financial viability of the business’. They added that despite ‘great customer reviews, strong, positive customer feedback, together with high numbers of repeat visitors, the financial performance of the site has not met levels required to sustain ongoing operations’. They noted that their other two sites at Sherwood Pines and Bracelands will remain active.
This is an area managed by Forestry England although the site is run by Sherwood Pines Ltd. Forestry England told Marlborough.news: ‘The current operator of Forestry England Camping at Postern Hill (Sherwood Pines Camping Ltd) have chosen not to renew their lease at the end of the current season. At the moment, no decision has been taken about the campsite’s future, which will close for the winter as usual at the start of October. Forestry England continues to manage Savernake Forest in line with the commitments we made to the forest and local communities in the Our Shared Forest land management plan. This can be found on our website at https://www.forestryengland.uk/article/our-shared-forest-savernake-forest.
What does this mean for those wishing to camp in Savernake Forest? After early October – no chance, unless Forestry England appoint another company to take on a new lease to run the site
