Gordon, known as Sandy to his Royal Hospital colleagues, talked to the summer school audience about his life at the London institution created by Charles II in 1692 to ‘offer comfort and succour to those broken by age or war’.
He explained what it takes to become a Man in Scarlet. Sandy was greeted by Marlborough’s Town Mayor, Councillor Margaret Rose, and the town’s two mace bearers.
