Last week, local children’s author Debi Evans, visited Year 6 at Preshute Primary School. When Debi, who lives in Marlborough, rescued a Jack Russell dog from the Dog’s Trust little did she think that he would become her inspiration for a series of children’s books. The five books all feature Rolo, who has now retired from school visits. In each book Rolo travels back in time to have an exciting adventure.
“The books,” says Debi, “are designed to be educational and to link literacy with the history the children are studying at school. I try to pick out the exciting bits of history to inspire the children.”
Named Rolo because of his toffee, chocolate coloured face, Debi’s dog often time travels to historical events with a local connection. For example, he finds out about King Alfred of Wessex and what really happened to the burnt cakes. He also discovers exciting mythical creatures held captive in Silbury Hill.
Rolo is also able to make things happen in history. Apparently Rolo was present at the signing of the Magna Carta and ran off with the quill leaving King John to use the seal from his ring instead.
“When I rescued Rolo he took a while to settle and he didn’t like spending the night in the kitchen. Then he suddenly settled and I realised he had a secret – there was a trap door under the kitchen sink that takes him out at night. He discovered a tree dragon in the Savernake Forest who tells him he is the chosen one and he can use the time tunnel. He is then able to make things happen in history.”
Ella Palin, Roe Deer Y6 teacher, commented, “We really enjoyed Debi Evans’ visit on Thursday. The children were greatly interested in her engaging, 45-minute assembly where she shared a little bit about her books about her time travelling rescue dog, Rolo, and answered questions that the children had.”
Debi said,“I aim to empower young minds. I enjoy the research and weaving the fantasy. It’s great to go into schools, weave a bit of magic and inspire children to write their own stories.”
As well as talks and workshops in schools Debi gives talks to a range of adult groups. Debi can be contacted on debievansauthor@gmail.com Click here for more information.
