Could you play a key role in the development and management of our UNESCO Stonehenge & Avebury World Heritage Site? An independent Chair for the (new) Expert & Stakeholder Group (ESG) is being sought. This role will be to work closely with the Executive Board Chair as the two bodies – ESG and Executive Board will together form the core management of this vitally important World Heritage Site.
Both Avebury and Stonehenge form one of the most important iconic World Heritage Sites, certainly in this country but also anywhere in the world. The organisation managing the combined site – The Stonehenge & Avebury World Heritage Site Partnership – is there to protect, safeguard and oversee the journey for these two unique, archaeologically diverse and important monuments from prehistory into the future. For the generations to come to appreciate and enjoy. And this critical new role of ESG Chair is to be filled to help this going forward.
The Expert & Stakeholder Group has been created to bring together and channel the skills and knowledge and interests of a wide range of experts and stakeholders such as Archaeologists, Wiltshire Council, Parish Councils, groups such as the National Trust and English Heritage, local farming communities and more. This Expert & Stakeholder Group will work closely with the Executive Board for the WHS Partnership and its chair, Sarah Nichols.
Sarah told Marlborough.news: “It’s about delivering a vision. The Stonehenge & Avebury World Heritage Site is universally important for its unique and dense concentration of outstanding prehistoric monuments and sites which together form a landscape without parallel.
“We will work together to care for and safeguard this special area and provide a tranquil, rural and ecologically diverse setting for ita and its archaeology.
“This will allow present and future generations to explore and enjoy the monuments and their landscape settings more fully.”
An important role in the future development of the UNESCO Stonehenge & Avebury World Heritage Site.
For the ideal candidate: it’s not a full time role. A prestigious voluntary role, a commitment of 2-3 days per month, not salaried but with appropriate expenses. The ideal candidate would be someone with experience of being an Independent Chair of large and sensitive committees with a knowledge of effective structural governance. So not necessarily someone who may be an ‘expert’ in archaeology, history or Local Government, rather an individual who can bring good organisational management skills to channel the expert knowledge, opinions and interests of members of this group to the benefit of the vision for the WHS going forwards.
