Coopers Meadow, notable for Sheep now has bench provided by Lions

The weather enjoyed a brief moment of respite earlier this morning (Sunday 11 February) as a new bench overlooking the River Kennet in Coopers Meadow and provided by the Marlborough & District Lions was officially unveiled in glorious sunshine.

The sheep may have been absent, away for the winter, but the Lions were out in force to celebrate the presence of the new bench and enjoy the beautiful tranquil view of the Kennet on a rare sunny February morning.

“We wanted to do something to celebrate the Lions International Centennial Year and we though it would be lovely to provide a bench for the community to use and it would be there for a long time.”  said Susan Lampard, President of Marlborough Lions Club.  ”And we couldn’t have asked for a nicer position for it to be in.”  she added.

“Marlborough Lions group were formed in 1976 and the idea was for a group of Marlborough residents to help the community.  Forty two years later we are still very strong and very active organising many events to raise funds which can then be channelled back.”  added Susan when asked about what Marlborough Lions do.  ”It’s not just the Lions group, we have many friends who come and help out when we are organising an event, they all come and help out, we couldn’t do this without them.”

“What we’re about is to help the local community.  Anybody that needs our help, we will be there.  Normally requests for help come from Social Services, a carer, the church, but we also give to local organisations in need and recently we have given to Marlborough St Mary’s, the Youth Centre, the Scouts, Air Ambulance and many others.” she explained.  ”The generosity of the Marlborough people always amazes us, we’re so grateful.”

The next major Lions event will be a sponsored walk – not just any walk but a ‘beating of the bounds’ – following (as closely as possible) the Marlborough town boundary, which extends to approximately twelve and a half miles across all sorts of terrain.  Anyone wishing either to take part of sponsor anyone brave enough to sign up click here to visit the Marlborough Lions home page or their Facebook page here.
