At 6:30pm yesterday (Friday 28 November), after a countdown from 10 Mayor Emily Trow pressed down on the plunger sticking out of the big red box and Marlborough’s High Street Christmas Lights came out of their near year-long hibernation and added that bit of seasonal decoration to the High Street.
The High Street was thronged with visitors for this annual highlight of the calendar, enjoying the delights offered by stallholders, the range of which extended from the large tree at the Town Hall end, all the way down to the Library, just short of St Peter’s. All sorts present, every sort of food, snack or drink that anyone would ever need or imagine consuming whilst wandering along the High Street, and even animals. A few rare breed sheep, Greyface Dartmoor bought to the High Street from (ironically) Goatacre, near to Calne (yes, there was a Goat there as well). The High Street was busy.

Santa made a double appearance – in St Peter’s where queues waited for that all important magical meeting, and also in his sleigh that was pulled up and down the High Street courtesy of Malborough’s Lions.
But serenading all present were choirs from local primary schools – starting with the choir from Great Bedwyn and Oare Primary Schools, followed soon after by the choir from Ogbourne Primary School, then the Marlborough Academy of Dance & Drama.

For anyone close, less than at least 50 metres away from the Town Hall the Mayor when plunging the plunger wasn’t visible. Recently installed ‘Elf’n Safety’ bars to the balcony, almost a cage, but there to prevent anyone from tipping over on to the Town Hall steps by the main entrance made her impossible to see, the Mayor turning on the lights from behind the bars…..

BBC was there as well, Points West with reporter Will Glennon interviewing Mayor Emily. Street performers as well, the ‘Angels on stilts’ and plenty more.
Lots of other activity, below is a selection of pics from the evening:
