This week, November 2 – 7, Burbage Primary School pupils participated in UK Parliament Week. The week of activities was part of the school’s work on British values and designed to educate children about how a democracy works.
Zoe Garbutt, Principal of Burbage Primary School told Marlborough.news, “The whole school has been really, really buzzing and I have been hugely impressed with the children’s responsible attitudes.
We linked our school council elections to elections in real life. The children were encouraged to think about what makes a good school councillor and what attributes and qualities are needed such as listening to others, respecting other people’s opinions and representing them.
Over half- term the children wrote speeches, created powerpoints and posters which they presented to their classes about why they believed they should be a school councillor.
They then had to complete their polling cards with their full names and addresses in order to register to vote. The socially distanced polling station was open. We now have a brand new school council as a result.
Our election day was kick-started with a video message from Danny Kruger MP where he showed us the Houses of Parliament and spoke about his work as an MP in Westminster and in the constituency. We would like to thank him for taking the time to do this.”
Burbage School Councillors play an active part in the school. They discuss new projects for the school, are involved in staff recruitment and promote the views of the class they each represent.
