With a gathering of mayoral chains and two very large cheques, Great Western Hospitals’ Brighter Futures Fund said a massive ‘thank you’ to its many fundraisers for pushing its radiotherapy appeal total over the million pound mark.
Brighter Futures’ Jennifer Green was thrilled at the total reached after just sixteen months: “We continue to be amazed and humbled by the efforts and generosity of local people to help us reach our goal. Every penny raised is a step closer to bringing vital cancer treatment closer to home for families in Swindon and Wiltshire for generations to come.”
“However, we can’t stop now and we are already focusing on how we reach the next £1 million in our £2.9 million total.”
At a special event hosted by the mayor of Swindon, Eric Shaw, a group of local Rotary Clubs – including Marlborough, Cricklade, Swindon and Royal Wootton Bassett – presented a cheque for £70,000.
The second cheque came the Dr Thomas Cranston Wilson Charitable Trust – another £50,000 representing the second part of the Trust’s £100,000 gift to this appeal.
All money raised for the Radiotherapy Appeal goes towards the £2.9 million needed for specialist equipment that will be at the heart of a new Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust radiotherapy unit on the Great Western Hospital site.
Currently cancer patients in Swindon and Wiltshire face weeks of daily visits to and from the nearest radiotherapy centre in Oxford for their treatment.
