Susi, a trained and registered Assistance Dog who is three years old and is a husky mix has been named a finalist in the 2025 Animal Star Awards for Working Dog of the Year. Susi lives with her owner, Felicity Roberts, in Ogbourne St George. Felicity told Marlborough.news, “Being nominated recognises Susi’s extraordinary contributions and the profound impact she has had on countless lives. The award winners will be announced in May 2025.”
Felicity said that she knew as soon as Susi arrived in her life as a puppy that she was special. With the help of an assistance dogs’ charity, Recovery Assistance Dogs(RAD) Felicity was able to train Susi for her role.
Felicity commented, “Susi is more than just a medical alert companion. In addition to her primary role as a dedicated assistance dog, Susi has taken on two remarkable roles that highlight her versatility, compassion, and commitment to making a difference in her community.”
Susi serves as the Therapy Dog at Ogbourne St George Primary School near Marlborough, where she provides comfort and support to students. She offers a patient ear to children practising their reading or delivers a comforting furry cuddle to those in need.
“Susi’s calming presence has had a profound effect on the students,” explained Felicity. “Her ability to sense when someone needs her most has made her an invaluable source of support to the children.”
In addition to her work in school, Susi is also the first-ever Wellbeing Support Dog for Wiltshire Search and Rescue. Since joining the team, she has already played a crucial role in providing emotional support to team members who have experienced trauma during intense search missions.
“Susi’s unwavering calm and ability to offer comfort during difficult moments has proven to be an essential part of the team’s wellbeing efforts,” commented Felicity. “I may be a bit biased, but I truly believe Susi is one of the most unbelievable, kind souls around. She wasn’t just brought into my life to help me as my Assistance Dog, but to spread her healing energy and support to so many others. Her empathy knows no bounds, and I’m forever grateful to have her by my side. Susi’s nomination as a finalist for Working Dog of the Year reflects the remarkable difference she makes in the lives of those around her. Her story is one of love, empathy, and unwavering support, proving that the bond between humans and animals is truly life-changing.”
