Lord Mandelson, the controversial Labour peer, former Cabinet minister and Euro Commissioner, is renting a four-bedroom detached house at Wilcot, outside Pewsey, the Daily Mail reports today (Wednesday).
The property is said to belong to Nat Rothschild, the 42-year-old financier and member of the multi-millionaire family, and owner of the nearby Stowell Park estate, who is a friend of both Lord Mandelson and Chancellor George Osborne, with whom he was at school at Eton.
Lord Mandelson, who is 60, reveals his move to the country in his diary column in the Spectator political magazine, writing: “I am a step nearer to realising my dream of a arming life.
“I am going to a modest dwelling in deepest Wiltshire next to the herdsman and his family. My lambing, milking skills will soon be tested. Baa and moo.”
