The A4 through Marlborough will now get a third Puffin pedestrian crossing for College students.
Wiltshire Councillor John Thomson, the Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Highways, Streetscene and Broadband, has given the go ahead for the “Implementation of a PUFFIN crossing on the A4 Bridewell Street, Marlborough to improve safety for pedestrians crossing at this location.”
His decision came into force on Monday, December 2. Eight residents had written to the Council objecting to the proposed Puffin – including town and unitary councillors Stewart Dobson and Nick Fogg. One resident wrote to support the scheme.
The crossing, which will be paid for by the College, will be sited very close to the Pewsey Bridge Road-A4 mini roundabout. When the plan came back to the Town Council last month, most councillors were steadfastly against the scheme.
The need for this third crossing was not raised when the College applied for planning permission to takeover the Ivy House Hotel as a student residence in the High Street. In its report Wiltshire Council said there were no ‘highway issues’ involved in the decision.
