Pewsey-based Rachel Lynes, singing coach to the stars, brought the West End to Marlborough in January, when she launched a musical theatre choir through her company, The Sing Space. After two concerts, one local and one in the Actors’ Church, Covent Garden, Rachel is looking forward to the choir’s new term.
She is looking for enthusiastic singers to join the choir, which will have its first get-together of the new season on September 21 at 7.30pm, meeting at St Mary’s Church on Marlborough High Street. “We are now welcoming new members into our Marlborough choir,” said Rachel, who spent ten years performing lead roles in London’s West End and is vocal coach to many of our best known West End stars. ‘Everyone over 16 is welcome. You just need a love of musical theatre and a desire to get the most out of your voice.

We are moving to St Mary’s Church from the College which will be more convenient for social get-togethers after rehearsals. I encourage anyone thinking of joining the choir to sign up as soon as possible as last time places sold out and we had a waiting list of 30!”
The choir will be singing well-known and much-loved songs from musicals, including Les Misérables, Wicked, West Side Story, Phantom of the Opera and Hairspray, whilst also learning singing techniques.
Rachel commented, “We will be spending most of the session learning the best show tunes in harmony. I’ll also be giving tips to get the most out of singing voices, including breathing, resonance, posture and range.”
A Christmas concert is planned as well as, in 2023, a concert in Cadogan Hall – a 1,000 seater concert hall in London – both concerts will raise funds for a mental health charity. The Marlborough choir will be singing on stage, side-by-side with some of the West End’s biggest names and other branches of The Sing Space choirs.
Rachel said she was delighted with the success of the choirs launched all over the country through The Sing Space which also offers online singing lessons. She describes The Sing Space as “a Joe Wicks but for singing!”
“Singing is so good for mental health,” Rachel said. “I love being part of something that can bring so much joy to people. At The Sing Space we coach everyone from Olivier Award winning West End performers to very nervous beginners.”
The termly fee for Marlborough’s musical theatre choir is £124.50, with part-funded places available for those on Universal Credit. Each session runs for 90 minutes.
