On Saturday last week (2 August) The Common was crowded as what can only be described as a Festival of Rugby (RugFest? – OK, no…) took place. Lions, Sevens, Walking Rugby and a Rugby Academy Masterclass for young players. A busy and very popular day……

A bit of everything. The main attraction was the Tauvu UK Rugby Sevens Tournament, where, on a dry pitch the teams showed the skills, athleticism, speed, ball-handling dexterity and prowess that can only be on show in a top Sevens game.
In the packed clubhouse there were no seats left and not much standing room for the Lions final test on their tour being shown on the big screen. Outside a Walking Rugby tournament where RWB (Royal Wootton Bassett) just pipped Marlborough to first prize.
Over the road was the Academy Masterclass for any 13+ age group players, who were being shown how to hone their skills. But the main activity on the pitch was the Tauvu UK Rugby Sevens Tournament . Twelve teams – local, International and Army were competing and in the end the Naitasiri Highlanders UK came out on top defeating 2 Yorks Veilomani 21-17. Marlborough came fourth, beaten 29-12 by Ra Roosters in the third / fourth place playoff.
