Marlborough Town Hall and Alan Brown have been used in the same sentence probably thousands of times over the past quarter of a century. Alan has been the caretaker/manager for the Town Hall, the iconic building that marks ‘Marlborough’ and dominates the eastern end of the High Street. It’s been his domain. If you ever needed to find anything, get the PA system working, or even just get into the building at a particular time for some good reason, then Alan was the person to ask as he’d make it happen.
Earlier this afternoon (Thursday 24 August) Alan’s retirement party was held – in the Town Hall (where else?). Colleagues, friends, clients, Councillors came along to wish him all the very best for retirement and most importantly, to say ‘thanks’.
He didn’t have to come far to work. Alan is Ogbourne St Andrew. Born, raised and living in the village for all of his life. Alan started his working life in Marlborough at The College as a gardener, then to Swindon Council as supervisor of cleaning staff, and then ‘almost back home’ to Marlborough to the Town Hall for twenty four years as the caretaker and manager of the building.
What next? Travel, gardening and spending probably more time on Ogbourne St Andrew Parish Council issues as he’s a long standing Councillor for the Parish.
We (marlborough.news) will miss Alan, he’s been there to assist in many things, even if it’s just opening up the Hall and balcony to set up a time lapse camera to create a speeded up video of the Mop weekend as we did a few years back. Alan helped and made things like that (actually quite important) happen.
Thanks Alan, have a thoroughly enjoyable and long retirement. You’ve earned it!

Easier pre-season warm-up game against Weston-Super-Mare gives an encouraging result
