Sirs
We write with regard to the sad state of Marlborough Leisure Centre.
Marlborough is incredibly fortunate to have the facility and things have come a long way from the unheated open-air pool in the Town Mill area to the heated swimming pool and dry side facilities we currently have. But we are saddened to watch the building fall into disrepair due to under investment over the past decade.
At various stages in our lives, we have both worked at the leisure centre and know that it was a buzzing place with a great team and we were well looked after. It was the heart of the community. The reception foyer and café were filled with people of all ages drinking coffee and chatting. It was a place where people challenged themselves outside their comfort zone, but in a safe and fully supported environment. It enabled older members of the community to still enjoy activities and to keep young at heart, laugh, socialise. Equally, it was a place for those who felt lonely and isolated to feel part of something.
It feels so empty and soulless now. The walls are pitted with holes, the exterior is full of weeds, flaking paint and green algae. The changing facilities and toilets are so deeply engrained with dirt they are beyond cleaning. The squash court has plaster falling down. It looks tired and it needs investment. The staff who work at the Leisure Centre are amazing and try their hardest to keep it ticking over but retention and recruitment are clearly a problem.
Wiltshire Council runs over 20 leisure centres, many of which have been renovated in recent years. Marlborough needs to be next on the list.
We know budgets are tight but please, please consider prioritising Marlborough Leisure Centre. Investment is well overdue. Invest for the future. Advertise and make the café lease an attractive prospect for someone to consider. Restart the previously successful active* holiday clubs, Saturday specials, the bouncy castle, trampolining, children’s parties, swimming pool parties, disco swims, Open Days, reopen the hugely appreciated Crèche facility. There are so many reasons to invest in our leisure centre.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Tom Hanson, Marlborough
