
We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Building Caretaker to oversee the maintenance, security, and preservation of our Grade II* listed building alongside our Operations Manager. An understanding of the best practices for maintaining historic buildings is preferred, however, you will have the full support and guidance from our Operations Manager and any training needed will be provided.
The caretaker will ensure the building’s historic integrity is upheld while supporting day-to-day operations. Duties will also include assisting the Events Manager in setting up for events and unlocking/locking up the building.
Key Responsibilities:
Building Maintenance and Preservation:
- Perform regular inspections (with the Operations Manager) to identify and address wear, damage, or potential risks to the building’s structure and features.
- Carry out minor repairs and maintenance in compliance with conservation guidelines for grade-listed buildings.
- Liaise with specialised contractors for major works, ensuring adherence to heritage preservation standards and planning permissions.
- Ensure cleaning and upkeep of both internal and external areas, including historic features such as stonework, woodwork, and decorative elements.
Security and Safety:
- Monitor and maintain security systems to protect the building from vandalism, theft, or unauthorised access.
- Ensure fire safety equipment is in place and regularly inspected, adhering to all regulations.
- Assist the Operations Manager to implement emergency response plans.
Facilities Management:
- Oversee utilities such as heating, lighting, and plumbing, ensuring they meet modern standards while respecting the building’s historic fabric.
- Manage waste disposal, recycling, and the careful use of cleaning products that are suitable for historic materials.
- Coordinate with staff, tenants, or visitors to ensure smooth daily operations.
Act as a point of contact for contractors
Events Assistance:
- Working with the Events Manager to ensure all building requirements for events are met (setting the heating, lights etc)
- Opening and closing the building outside of regular hours
- Setting up for events; moving/arranging tables, chairs and stage
Qualifications and Skills:
- Experience in caretaking, facilities management, or a similar role.
- Practical skills in maintenance and repairs.
- Excellent problem-solving and organisational abilities.
- Physical fitness and the ability to work in challenging conditions (e.g., at height or in confined spaces).
- First Aid, fire safety, or relevant health and safety certifications are desirable.
- Strong interpersonal skills for working with colleagues, tenants, and the public.
Working Conditions:
- Based on-site at the grade-listed property.
