Crofton Beam Engines

Winter Works Open Day

Saturday 21st October – 10am – 3pm

Crofton Beam Engines, home to the world’s oldest working steam driven beam engine, is pleased to announce that visitors will be able to see our winter maintenance programme in action on Saturday 21st October.

It will also allow visitors to see work behind the scenes at our unique site.

These open days have proved very popular in previous years and once again visitors will be able to talk to the volunteers and hear about our plans as we work towards reopening at Easter 2018.

Entry is FREE and tea/coffee and biscuits will be available for a donation towards our work.

About Crofton: Crofton Beam Engines is situated on the north side of the Kennet and Avon Canal near to its highest point.

It was built to pump water to the highest level of the canal some 13m (40’) higher and 1.13Km (0.7miles) to the west.

It is home to two magnificent steam driven beam engines one of which can claim to be the oldest in the world still in its original location and doing the job it was installed for in 1812.

Crofton Beam Engines is a Grade I listed site.  It is also a branch of the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust who operate the site through an enthusiastic band of volunteers all of whom are keen to provide visitors with a memorable experience.
