Steaming days at Crofton

29 June 2024 @ 10:00 am 4:30 pm

Crofton pumping station and beam engine

Crofton Beam Engines will be open and steaming the 29th and 30th of June. Opening times on both days, 10:00 – 16:30.

Come and see the magnificent beam engines at work pumping water from Wilton Water into the Kennet and Avon Canal, just as they have done for over 200 years. Watch these surprisingly quiet marvels of engineering and remember that Number One Engine was installed in 1812 which was 13 years before the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway!

There are two special events for this weekend, a duck race will take place on both Saturday and Sunday at 12:30. The ducks enter the water from Crofton’s massive pumps, rush in to the stream from the pumps and pass under our bridge, where the first duck to pass through wins their entrant a prize.

There will also be a fun trail for children of all ages. The trail will take visitors around the site while they hunt special trail markers. When they find a marker, the trail booklet will tell them about each area of the site. Those who complete the trail will get a sticker.

Visitors can get to Crofton by road or via the canal. There is a pay car park, those who walk or cycle along the canal towpath can reach the site across canal bridge 101 and a short walk East along Dark Lane.
