North Wessex Downs Walking Festival – The Road Less Travelled: exploring lesser-known sites in the Avebury landscape
5 June @ 6:00 pm
Avebury forms part of the Stonehenge and Avebury World Heritage Site, celebrated for its extraordinary collection of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments. Join Melanie Pomeroy-Kellinger (Wiltshire Council Archaeology Service) and Claire Selman (Stonehenge and Avebury World Heritage Site Partnership) to discover how this fascinating landscape was used 5,000 years ago.
The walk will cover 3-4 miles in total, exploring within and beyond the western part of the Avebury World Heritage Site, and will take 2.5-3 hours. Walking conditions will be moderately easy, on mostly tarmac or gravel footpaths, with only a little uphill.
Please come dressed in clothing appropriate for the weather conditions on the day, and wear footwear suitable for walking on public footpaths across country. Please bring your own food and refreshments. A personal supply of water is essential during hot weather. Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome to join us.
Walk leader/organisation: Melanie Pomeroy-Kellinger and Claire Selman, Wiltshire Council Archaeology Service
