North Wessex Downs Walking Festival – The Historic Ridgeway

The historic features along The Ridgeway and in its surrounding landscape tell stories from every historic period as far back as early prehistory. Quiet earthworks and silent fields hold secrets that are waiting to be discovered.

This circular walk led by the Historic Ridgeway Project Manager, Dan Bashford, explores and explains the archaeological earthworks and below ground archaeology within and around this section of the Ridgeway.

On the walk Dan tells us about the changing landscape and land use over time with the Ridgeway forming a constant through many historic periods. We will learn about the people who lived and worked around the Ridgeway from the Neolithic period until the present day.

The Historic Ridgeway Project is a 3-year project that seeks to bring people together to interpret and conserve archaeological sites and features along The Ridgeway in Oxfordshire and West Berkshire – between Ashbury and Wallingford.
